DSA 2023 Pre-meeting trip

12-15 June

We will explore southeastern Oklahoma where the Ouachita Highlands and the Gulf Coastal lowland plains are found. This area has 122 documented odonate species.

Pre-trip will begin with a late afternoon/early evening meeting on the 12th to look for Emeralds (Ozark, Clamp-tipped, Mocha, and, hopefully, Texas; Somatochlora ozarkensis, tenebrosa, linearis, and margarita) or Shadowdragons (Orange, Smoky, and hopefully, Cinnamon; Neurocordulia xanthosoma, molesta, and virginiensis).

Day trips will include going to areas in and around Red Slough Wildlife Management Area (WMA), the Little River National Wildlife Refuge, Ouachita WMA, and the Ouachita National Forest. In additional to the above, we will look for species such as: Southern, Elegant, Slender, and Swamp Spreadwings (Lestes australis, inaequalis, rectangularis, and vigilax), various dancers and bluets (Argia and Enallagma), Duckweed Firetail (Telebasis byersi), Gray Petaltail (Tachopteryx thoreyi), Regal Darner (Coryphaeschna ingens), Comet Darner (Anax longipes), Bayou, Jade, and Stillwater Clubtails (Arigomphus maxwelli, submedianus, and lentulus), Ozark Clubtail (Gomphurus ozarkensis), Oklahoma and Pronghorn Clubtails (Phanogomphus oklahomensis and graslinellus), Interior Least Clubtail (Stylogomphus sigmastylus), and Spangled and Painted Skimmers (Libellula cyanea and semifasciata).

The 15th will be on your own making your way to Lawton, Oklahoma, for the annual meeting.

Lodging/Camping

Because we will head south one day and north the other, it is up to you in which town to stay. Broken Bow and Idabel offer options for multiple budgets, but book with discretion. Hochatown currently has the newest accommodations, thus prices are highest, but there are some really nice cabins. There are multiple rental agencies, but the one I’ve dealt with is Cabins in Broken Bow (in particular, https://cabinsinbrokenbow.com/standing-bear/ and https://cabinsinbrokenbow.com/wild-blue-yonder/). Make sure you tell them you are with the Dragonfly Meeting group.
